How to Choose a Study Tour: Cost, Safety and Ethics Checklist

1. The organizer and local ties

  • What is the organizer’s purpose and track record?
  • Does it have a continuing relationship with local groups?
  • Is time with local people built into the program?

2. The program

  • Does the itinerary state concrete visits, people you will meet and what you will learn?
  • Is there preparation beforehand and a debrief afterwards?

3. Cost

  • Check what is included (flights, lodging, meals, local transport, insurance) and what is not.
  • If part of the fee is a donation, is its use explained?
  • Check cancellation terms and the conditions for cancelling the tour.

4. Safety

  • Check the destination’s travel advisory (for Japan-based travelers: MOFA Overseas Safety).
  • Is travel insurance required, and is there an emergency contact system?

5. Respect for local communities

  • Are people, children and daily life treated with dignity, not as a spectacle? Are there rules for photography?
  • Are burdens on hosts kept reasonable and appreciation shown properly?
